Over 300 allotment plots in 22 acres on the sunny South West side of Crystal Palace Hill. A haven of peace and tranquility in the middle of a heavily built up area. Bordered by hedges and mature trees it provides a sanctuary for a wide range of wildlife.
We are a friendly community welcoming every gardener from the complete novice to the ones who win prizes. Individual plotholders on the site have won the prize for best kept plot in Croydon twice in the last decade and manage to get in the first three places in most years.
PLOTS :-We have a long waiting list for plots and at present our policy is to offer those available to applicants who live within two kilometres from the site. If you live further away you may still put your name on the list and we will try to find you a plot.
MEMBERSHIP:- Even if you do not want a plot you can still join the Society as a "Garden Member".
Garden membership" subscriptions are £2 plus 10 pence to join! Two partners living at the same address may join as joint members; 20 pence to join but only £3.00 subscription.
THE DISTRIBUTION CENTRE carries as wide a range of stock as many garden centres and often at lower prices. Advice from experienced gardeners is always available and we stock seed potatoes, onion sets and bedding plants in season.
HALL:- We have a small hall in our main building which is a cafe and social centre during the daytime but is available for members and local community organisations to hire for late afternoon and evening events involving up to fifty people. It has ramped access for the disabled, a small well equipped kitchen and full toilet facilities including a disabled toilet.
LIBRARY:- We also have a study room which houses an extensive library of gardening and related books which is available to members at weekends and during the week by prior appointment.
WINDMILL:- We have an electricity generating wind turbine on the site which is often visited by school parties and other groups who wish to learn about wind generation.
There are photos of how it was put up here.
WORKSHOP:- We have a workshop on site which in addition to maintaining the Society's equipment has some spare capacity for repair and overhaul of members strimmers, rotovators and mowers.
POND - We are in the process of restoring a 200+ year old pond on the site which we hope will be available as an educational facility in 2008.
Members may use the "Notice Board" on this web site to advertise items for private sale or to publicise the activities of other groups which they belong to.
In addition to the toilet facilities in the central building there are toilets on site for use by the plotholders
Novices will find that our members are happy to give advice and SPA HLL TRAINING, which is run jointly by the Allotment Society and SHOGG, provides formal instruction in basic techniques.
VOLUNTEERS:- Our office, distribution centre, cafe and workshop are staffed entirely by volunteer members who also do almost all site maintenance. We always welcome volunteers and have a wide range of work for them to do. Those who do regular voluntary work for the Society may be given preference for available plots.
You can write to us at the address above or e-mail us
Some of our plots have remained in the same family for three generations. Our membership is an ethnic mix which reflects the local population; cultivational styles, techniques, crops and tools from all over the world can be seen on the plots.
The site gates are kept locked except when the allotment centre is open and plotholders will be issued with a key on payment of a £5 deposit returnable when the key is returned.
